On April 12, four hospital leaders representing the Northern Sierra Section met with U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa’s (R, CA-1) Washington, D.C., office to provide local perspectives and impacts for when hospital issues soon present themselves in Congress. The emphasis was on the need for additional hospital funding, help with workforce challenges including behavioral health professionals, and support for a Hospital at Home waiver extension. Within the Northern Sierra Section, the issue of workforce shortages is the dominant one for many, as it often reduces the ability to provide care while increasing the cost of providing that care.
In addition, Hospital Council and PG&E continue to work together to prepare hospitals for potential public safety power shutoff-related outages. Fortunately, the number of hospitals projected to be impacted remains very low and decreases each year thanks to electrical grid improvements and other mitigation efforts, and serves as a reminder of the priority that PG&E places on minimizing hospital outages.
