June 28 marked the first in-person joint meeting of the San Joaquin-Mother Lode and Stanislaus-Merced Sections in 30 months. Hospital executives met in Ripon to discuss workforce challenges and explore ways of partnering more closely with local community colleges to meet the supply of health care workers. Taking advantage of the face-to-face setting, they also shared lessons learned during the pandemic regarding leadership, health care, crisis management, and personal growth. Two days later, the Sacramento-Sierra Section met in person to do a deep dive on the vote results of the California Emergency Medical Services Authority ambulance patient offload (APOT) commission. CHA Vice President Sheree Lowe reported on which recommendations will require additional advocacy with members of the commission. Members also discussed the state of dialogue on APOT with local emergency medical services providers.
Take Away / Next Steps
At their next section meetings, the San Joaquin-Mother Lode and Stanislaus-Merced Sections will discuss the possibility of direct funding for local college nursing programs to expand the size of student cohorts. The Sacramento-Sierra Section will continue to monitor statewide movement on APOT issues while working locally to improve offload times.
