Guns. Knives. Bomb threats. Anger. Frustration. Fear. These can be (and have been) elements for disaster for staff and patients in a hospital. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 16% of all workplace fatalities result from violence. The FBI identified 305 active shooter incidents involving 282 shooters in the United States that occurred between 2000-2019. Of those, fifteen incidents occurred in a health care environment resulting in 62 casualties. This dynamic environment and its potential for violent disruption has hospital leadership searching for solutions that will protect their staff and patients.

Steve Weiler currently leads the Active Shooter/Threat and Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (TEAM®) programs, conducts security risk assessments, designs/delivers HSEEP compliant exercises, and advises on business continuity for HSS, Inc. Prior to working with HSS, Steve spent over 28 years as a law enforcement professional. Steve was integral in coordinating his organization’s response activities to the 9/11 terror attacks and H1N1, preparation for NATO 2012, and numerous regional incident management activities.
