In the Northern Sierra Section, the most challenging issues continue to revolve around workforce, with many leaving the profession, leaving the state, or becoming travelers. For those who remain, many are not able to report to work because of COVID-19 infections or exposures. This comes at a time when hospitals (especially their emergency departments) are experiencing a marked increase in patient-to-staff workplace violence.
Recruitment has only become more challenging because of a shortage of housing in rural areas due to wildfires, demand from those moving from urban areas, and a doubling of housing prices in the last few years. In the face of these trials, many Northern Sierra hospitals continue to innovate and elevate, with new programs, new construction, and many awards for quality and patient-centered care. The challenges keep coming and hospitals continue to meet and rise above them.
