Coastal Northern CA Counties Hit Hard by COVID-19 Surge

Who

Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties

What

With a 37% vaccination rate among eligible individuals, Del Norte County’s sole hospital, Sutter Coast, has been combatting an intense surge of COVID-19-postitive patients for nearly a month. Sutter Coast CEO Mitchell Hanna is grateful for state assistance in setting up vaccination/testing clinics and securing staff.

Amid record-setting hospitalizations in Humboldt County, Redwood Memorial and St. Joseph’s of Eureka are experiencing severe staffing shortages. Both have now received team nursing waivers.

Adventist Health announced the postponement of all non-emergent elective surgeries at its facilities in Mendocino County to better manage the surge of COVID-19 patients. Mendocino County Public Health Officer Andy Coren, MD, estimates this volume of COVID-19-postive patients could last for up to two more months without a significant increase in vaccinations.

Takeaway/Next Steps

  • Get vaccinated. Spread the word.
  • Advocate everywhere possible for relief for hospitals and health care providers whose limits are being tested yet again by a surge of critically ill COVID-19-positive community members
