CEO Messages

In Every Advocacy Opportunity, One Message Rings True

From county to county and coast to coast, hospital leaders know one thing to be true: Hospitals are the backbone of their communities.

That’s the message Hospital Council delivers each time we advocate on your behalf, whether at the Annual Healthcare Meeting hosted last week by Becker’s, or the American Hospital Association’s Annual Meeting and Cap-to-Cap events happening right now in Washington, D.C.

In addition to caring for the millions of Californians who seek treatment in hospitals every year, hospitals generate hundreds of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in economic activity.

During Cap-to-Cap, a gathering of Sacramento-area leaders, Hospital Council shared a new infographic illustrating the value hospitals provide, including more than 100,000 jobs generated and more than $25 million toward local economies. In advocating for our member hospitals on everything from workforce development to innovation, our starting point is simple: Communities are healthier when they have strong, stable hospitals.

At Becker’s Healthcare Conference the message was clear: the health care and hospital playbook is changing, and it is changing fast. CEOs are sharpening their focus on a small set of critical priorities, communicating them relentlessly, and pushing decision-making closer to the front lines, where speed and accountability matter most.

Growth strategies are also being redefined, shifting away from simply adding beds toward smarter resource deployment, expanded care in the home, and a stronger emphasis on prevention. Financial pressures are not easing, and waiting for rate recovery is neither viable nor realistic.

California hospital leaders, including more than 25 from the Hospital Council service area, were not just present — they led these conversations, underscoring California’s significant role in navigating complexity and shaping solutions that the rest of the country is watching closely.

Even beyond their mission of care, hospitals are critical cornerstones of their communities. That’s just as true in the remotest corner of our state as it is in a bustling urban area, and it unites every hospital. It is the foundation of all our advocacy, and why we’ll never stop communicating and demonstrating the value of hospitals.
