Nursing Education Needs Are a Critical Concern

Who

  • Hospitals in the Northern Sierra section

What

In their ongoing efforts to identify increasingly prevalent workforce challenges, hospitals across the Northern Sierra section have determined there is a critical need for licensed vocational nurse (LVN) to registered nurse (RN) education. In addition, new RN staffing ratios for skilled-nursing facilities are on the horizon, meaning the need for additional RNs will continue to grow — and the health care community must work to meet this need. To assist in this area, Hospital Council is working with the California Hospital Association, community colleges, and hospitals to develop programs that will increase opportunities for LVNs to become RNs.

Takeaway/Next Steps

Partners in this work have identified that remote learning and additional education opportunities in various localities — thus minimizing required travel, allowing working professionals to continue their education — is the key.
