San Joaquin County Planning for Addiction and Mental Health Treatment Campus

Who

  • San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors
  • Health Care Services Agency
  • Health Plan of San Joaquin

What

The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors approved a staff-proposal expenditure plan for the nationwide opioid settlement funds. The most significant element of the plan is the development of an addiction and mental health treatment campus like the Be Well Orange County program. The facility will be located on 23 acres of county-owned land in French Camp across Interstate 5 from the San Joaquin General Hospital. It will be built in two phases. The first phase, beginning in the 2024-25 fiscal year, will include a sobriety center, a medical detox center, a psychiatric health facility, and a crisis stabilization unit. The Health Plan of San Joaquin plans to contribute the millions of dollars required to conduct both programmatic and logistical feasibility studies.

Takeaway

The vision for this campus was hatched in the San Joaquin-Stanislaus Behavioral Health Task Force that Hospital Council convened from 2018-2020. Progress on the project slowed due to the pandemic, but the resources to bring it to fruition are now available. This will greatly improve care for the people of San Joaquin County and relieve the strain on local hospitals.
