Multispecialty Approach, Collaboration Is Key to Fighting Sickle Cell Disease

The Sickle Cell Adult Clinic at Community Cancer Institute is the only adult, comprehensive, dedicated sickle cell clinic in the Central Valley.

Life expectancy for adults living with sickle cell disease is about 30 years lower than average. According to Dr. Bukari, who leads the Sickle Cell Adult Clinic at Community Cancer Institute, while sickle cell disease is predominantly found in individuals of African or Hispanic ancestry, an increased amount of interracial and interethnic marriages is making the disease increasingly common.
