Seismic Rebuild Approved in San Jose

Who

  • Good Samaritan Hospital
  • San Jose City Council

What

On Nov. 19, Good Samaritan Hospital of San Jose, which is part of the HCA Healthcare system, went before the San Jose City Council seeking approval for its renewal and rebuild project to meet the 2030 seismic guidelines.

In late October, the San Jose Planning Commission denied the project even though it met the general plan guidelines and other stated requirements.

HCA Healthcare has included a community benefit package for the project that includes $3 million to the city’s affordable housing program, a commitment to reevaluate the potential to bring back inpatient psychiatric beds to the hospital, and the creation of a community advisory board.

After time for public comments and questions from city council members, the project passed unanimously.

Takeaway/Next Steps

HCA Healthcare should be breaking ground on seismic upgrades to Good Samaritan Hospital in about 12 months.
