Dan Tsai Named San Francisco Public Health Director

Who

  • San Francisco Department of Health (DPH)
  • San Francisco Mayor’s Offices

What

On Feb. 11, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed Dan Tsai as the new public health director, replacing Grant Colfax, MD.

Tsai has nearly two decades of health care leadership experience, with a decade in public service. In 2021, he was appointed by President Joe Biden to lead the nation’s Medicaid program at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; prior to that, he served as Massachusetts’ Medicaid director for more than six years. He is also a former partner in McKinsey & Company’s health care practice.

In Tsai’s new role, his foremost challenge is the city’s fentanyl state of emergency. Hospital Council awaits Tsai’s vision for the role hospitals will play in the strategy to combat the crisis.

Takeaway/Next Steps

Hospital Council is coordinating a meeting with section CEOs and Tsai. Members in San Francisco look forward to establishing a collaborative relationship and maintaining the coordination between hospital leadership and DPH.
