Healthcare Professional Shortage Area Designations Reviewed

Who

  • Department of Health and Human Services
  • Hospital Council

What

A Healthcare Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designation is critical for many recruitment efforts in hospitals and clinics, as the designation brings with it access to some state and federal programs offering tuition reimbursement, grants, visa waivers, and more. Some HPSA designations are automatic and tied to a specific clinic or facility, and other areas must apply for a designation.

Hospital Council is working with the Department of Health and Human Services to determine which hospital members of Hospital Council are in HPSA-eligible areas but are not already HPSA-designated.

Takeaway/Next Steps

Once determined, efforts will be made to promote completion of applications to secure designations for physicians and all types of behavioral health practitioners. For those already designated, Hospital Council will connect with hospitals to ensure they are aware of the many programs available to them.
