Hope and Innovation Change Baby’s Future 

A spina bifida diagnosis of unborn baby, Nixon, led Lindsey and Jared to participate in a landmark clinical trial that changed their baby’s future for the better.

At 18 weeks pregnant, Lindsey and her husband, Jared, received life-changing news: their unborn baby, Nixon, had spina bifida – a birth defect that can lead to lifelong challenges. But hope arrived when they learned of the pioneering UC Davis Health clinical trial at UC Davis Children’s Hospital, combining fetal surgery with stem cells to treat spina bifida. Doctors successfully performed the procedure during Lindsey’s pregnancy. One year later and baby Nixon is thriving: “Every milestone is a reminder…Every day we are so grateful for modern medicine,” Lindsey says.
