Infant’s RSV Exposes Life-Threatening Heart Defect

A pediatric nurse expresses gratitude after his co-workers save his daughter’s life.

When Mathew Hipwell’s 3-year-old son Everett caught RSV, he urged his son to stay away from baby sister, Ellie. As a pediatric nurse, he knew she was especially susceptible. Before long she was coughing, too.

Soon Ellie was taken to UC Davis Pediatric Emergency Department where an X-ray showed she had an enlarged heart. Next came an unexpected and grim diagnosis, but Hipwell knew his daughter was in good hands.
