At a section meeting in late August, Northern Sierra CEOs discussed a wide range of critical issues including the continued increase of patients being held on 5150s in the emergency departments (EDs), as well as shortages of behavioral health workforce across the region. In addition to increased ED use by patients with behavioral health needs, providers are experiencing increased ED volume overall, largely due to primary care provider retirements and the reduction of practice hours.
Takeaway/Next Steps
Hospital Council is helping hospitals collaborate with their local emergency medical service agency and Managed Medi-Cal plan on projects to address challenges related to ambulance services and behavioral health resources.
